Just this morning I made enough pumpkin spice mix for this fall and winter winter. When I searched for this recipe, I saw it dates back to 2015! Refreshed and updated, here’s how to make your own pumpkin spice mix.

Spices ready for Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spices

Easy tip: When baking a recipe that calls for the individual spices, trade your homemade mix straight across, teaspoon for teaspoon. Of course for pumpkin pie, but what about rolling snickerdoodle dough in pumpkin spice?

Homemade pumpkin spice how-to and details:

  1. Let ground cinnamon take the lead.

For lively zing, mix the cinnamon with ground ginger, for sweet warmth, add nutmeg. Pumpkin spice mix gets its peppery essence from allspice and cloves, and ground mace adds its pungent note. Altogether, they make an aromatic autumnal spice.

  2. Cinnamon spice and everything nice:

Blend your “pumpkin” spices using the freshest ground spices you can measure. If you have whole nutmeg—grate it. Resist the urge to pull out last year’s jar–fresh is happening when it comes to spices.

  3. Did you know?

One teaspoon of cinnamon has as many antioxidants as a ½-cup of blueberries.
Mace and nutmeg come from the same tropical tree. Mace is the lacy outer casing of a nutmeg seed.

Idea: A gift of homemade pumpkin spice mix would be welcome this time of year. Print your favorite pumpkin spiced recipe to go with it.
