Besides healthful watermelon and apple, this smoothie  includes the bright red veggie that some people profess to hate. Yup, there’s a sweet beet in your smoothie and that bright violet red means anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and detox benefits galore.

Don’t worry about the beet; its earthy flavor blends with and complements the natural sweetness of watermelon and apple, both nutritional stars in their own right. Hydrating watermelon benefits kidneys and overall cardiovascular health. Apples—well—an apple a day…

Beet, watermelon, and apple in blender jar with turmeric and cayenne pinches.

As if those 3 powerhouses aren’t enough, we’ve added a pinch of turmeric, well-known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant prowess. And a pinch of healthy cayenne pepper, for subtle stimulating cleansing spice.

This smoothie takes after of one of my favorite things about Mexico–the fresh juice market stands where they squeeze your juice while you wait. You can order blended combinations of fruits and vegetables, basically what you feel like that day. Given the choice, my favorite combo is a “vampiro.” Blood-cleansing vampiros are juiced to order from beets, apples carrots, and celery.

I wanted to call this smoothie a vampire, but Robbie said I’d have to wait until Halloween for that. Besides, beets and watermelon are at their summer peak, which means now is the time to kickstart your morning or cool off a hot afternoon with a nutrient-rich watermelon, apple and beet smoothie!

Watermelon and Beet Smoothie notes:

  • To make this smoothie I used a blender I bought at a garage sale. It might be faster with a Blendtec or Vitamix, (Affiliate links) but my old blender whipped up this smoothie no problem.
  • Beets are sweetest in summertime, especially when pulled from the garden or farmer’s market.
  • If spicy heat isn’t your thing, start with a wee pinch of cayenne. I appreciate cayenne’s flavor, but am not hugely heat tolerant–1/8 teaspoon was the right amount for me.
